Lennox

Lennox made it to the restroom down the corridor and ducked inside on trembling legs. The door on the last stall banged open and a tall girl walked out without looking at her. Lennox hung back and watched her wash her hands. When she left the room, Lennox hedged up closer to the sinks, to the mirror.

Her cheeks were flushed, and her eyes were glassy and wide.

Dr. Gannon had touched her. Just her face, but still. He knew she had been thinking about him. But the way he had touched her, the desperate sound of his voice—it made it pretty obvious he felt the same way.

Right?

Lennox looked down at the sink. She leaned sideways and let her backpack slide from her shoulder to the floor. Her heartbeat pounded in her throat, her ears, like a drum. She rested her hands on the edge of the sink and spread her fingers, watched with wonder as they shook.

What the hell was she doing? It wasn’t like he had threatened her. She was stumbling into this with her eyes wide open. No idea what her next move should be, what she wanted to happen, she reached for the faucet and turned on the cold water.

She was interested. Of course she was interested. The man was so intense; she longed to feel that intensity directed at her, the way it had been just minutes ago in his office.

But she couldn’t. It couldn’t happen. Maybe this was part of his game, how he played. Maybe he wanted to push her until she was begging him. Maybe that last little move he pulled was meant to drive her right back into his office, and maybe when she didn’t fall for it, he would start docking points.

Nothing else made sense. If Dr. Gannon had been asked to leave the last school where he taught because of inappropriate behavior, if that behavior had led to his divorce, he clearly had no morals. If he had done it once, she doubted he would hesitate to do it again.

She might not be the only one.

Dread, colder than the water she ran over her hands, pulsed through her. Of course she wasn’t the only one. Would a guy like that, a guy that looked like that, settle for her? Hell no. He probably hit on girls all day long.

And Lennox had been stupid enough to fall for it. To think he might be into her.

She turned the water off and gripped the sides of the sink with both hands. Water dripped to the floor as she stared at herself in the mirror again. The churning in her belly was angry now; she was angry with him, but even more so with herself.

“Get it together, Lex.” With a deep breath, she took a step back from the sink and reached for her bag. Slinging it over her shoulder, she wiped her hands on her jeans and headed back out to the hallway.
